Diabetes Mellitus affects 33 million Americans, with an estimated 7.2 million cases currently undiagnosed. As the diabetes epidemic continues to grow, projections suggest that by 2050, one in three Americans will develop diabetes in their lifetime. Diabetic individuals are 2-3 times more likely to experience periodontal disease compared to non-diabetics, and with 80% of diabetics belonging to middle and lower socioeconomic groups, dental clinicians have a unique opportunity to positively impact these patients’ lives. In 2020, new CDT codes were introduced to assist dental care providers in recognizing and managing the oral-systemic link associated with diabetes. This course aims to equip dental professionals with the knowledge and tools necessary to identify the types, causes, and treatments of diabetes, thereby enhancing patient care.
